Mad Men Dress Challenge : I'm In!

I need another project like a need a hole in the head, but this one was irresistable!!!

This challenge is run over at Julia Bobbin (you can check out the post here) and the idea is that you find a dress from Mad Men that you love and you create your own version.  Luckily I have until the 19th of April to get this done!

Now I haven't watched a lot of the Mad Men seasons (hubby's not a fan) but from what I have watched it was a toss up between a Joan dress and a Betty dress.  I think my figure lends itself more to Joan's style than Betty's so I google image searched and came up with this one.

What do you think of my choice???

By the way - the Mad Men doll - whats the go there!  That stick figure couldn't look less like Joan if it tried!!!!

But back to the dress.... blue is a good colour on me and I like the details and the little wing collar.  And I've found me some blue pure wool crepe to make it up in because I thought it would be a great dress coming into the colder season here in Australia.  I've also found a similar brooch and a pen necklace!

The one thing I'm really struggling with is finding a similar patterned fabric, so I'm putting the call out there to the universe - does any one have anything similar, or know where I can get something similar.  I don't need very much of it at all - its only for the dickie and the cuffs, so all I'm really looking for is a remnant...

I have my fingers crossed!!!!

  1. Lovely! Where did you get your wool crepe from? I'm hoping to get some at Rathdowne Fabrics (the place I got that voucher from)...I hope they don't charge $50 a metre or something ridiculous like that.

Is your blue as dark or lighter than Joan's dress?
It will look fab in any shade I think :-) And suit you perfectly!

I think its pretty close to the blue of Joan's dress :)

  2. Mickaela at Polkadot Overload attempted to make it and also had trouble finding a suitable fabric for the Dickie.

  5. Hi Beccie -

I absolutely love the Mad Men Challenge. Although I have not seen the show in quite some time - I do adore the dresses/costumes. I'm seriously considering joining in on the challenge - but I must admit, its been a very very long time since I've sewn anything for myself. Always for others. Also, I'm hoping to find a pattern that is similar to one of the dresses and then I can alter the design. Anyway, I will do a little research and decide in the next couple days. I'm open for any ideas or suggestions you might have.

P.S. - the outfits you've made are absolutely beautiful!

    1. I haven't watched it in ages either Rosalind, but wow isn't the fashion fabulous! Such an inspiration - its no wonder people love it so much!!

And you should join the challenge if for no other reason that you need to do things for yourself every now and again to maintain the love for what you do - burn out is bad!

There are so many options and so many characters that I wouldn't know where to start - but thats an interesting idea! Might make a suggestion post next week - keep your eyes out!

And thank you for the feedback on my work :)
