Now that the fabulous wool crepe has arrived, I need your help making a decision on the fabric for the dickie and the cuffs. Here is the wool crepe so you know the colour:
And here is a reminder of the dress I'm making:
My wool crepe is a bit more 'royal blue' than Joan's dress which is more 'french blue' to me, but anyway!
I've found the following fabrics that I think might work for the dickie and cuffs. I know they are no where near identical but you've got to work with what you can find right?
First up is this cotton print of the New York skyline. I know it looks dreadfully modern, but the colours and the shapes do mimic the fabric on Joan's dress - and Mad Men is set in New York...
Second is this poly satin. I don't have much to say to justify this one, other than the colours are kinda pretty...
Thirdly is this satin charmeuse. Nothing like the original fabric, but its a blue and green toned leopard print... and who doesn't love a bit of leopard print!
Lastly is this silk charmeuse. Its also nothing like the original fabric on Joan's dress, but to me it has a very 1950s kind of look, and I think it would work well...
So help. I can't make a decision. Should I buy:
a) New York cotton
b) Dotty poly satin
c) Leopard satin charmeuse
d) Plaid silk charmeuse
I'm leaning heavily towards d but also like a... help!!!

Love the color of your fabric. I like both b and c although I am leaning more towards c because you hardly ever see leopard print in such nice subtle colors.
ReplyDeleteAnd leopard is a wardrobe staple for me... :)
DeleteNo doubt. Go for the leopard. C is the closest to the inspiration in color and general design look.
ReplyDeleteThanks Relynn :) You know I love leopard :)
DeleteI agree B or C however I do think you would look drop dead gorgeous in that dress made form C. It is such a fantastic print.
ReplyDeleteC seems to be a very popular option!!!
DeleteI say C, But, if your feeling a little gutsy - go with A. I love the NYC skyline. Either way, you'll have a great finished look.
ReplyDeleteIts not expensive... maybe I just buy a yard of the New York one and see what it looks like in person...
DeleteOoh I say C :) Prit Prit
ReplyDeleteIts looking like C is winning hands down!
DeleteA all the way-its similar to the colors she has and its ny and it doesnt look cheesy at all but kitschy and i love that!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA hehe xox
ReplyDeletehehehehe Just because you love it Bunny I will buy a yard and see what it looks like in person :D
DeleteIm leaning towards the first fabric simply because it has the brown in it.
ReplyDeleteIts hard to pick one isn't it!
DeleteHUGE fan of C, but I'm with you on buying a bit of A just to see how it looks in person. If it's impressive in "real life" then I think it's a viable option.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see your choice!
At the moment I'm definitely buying at least two of these, cause sometimes they look different in person and I want to have options :) But I can see myself buying three...
DeleteI love the New York one, but I think it might make it more costume than outfit, so I'm voting C- the satin charmeuse.
ReplyDeleteI'm amazed at how popular the leopard print one is! Thamks for your input Ellen :)
DeleteWow, so many lovely choices! although I love C, I believe that B would work better with the wool (which is the most amazing blue I have ever seen, can't wait to see what you make of it!) good luck! xx Kim
ReplyDeleteThis was the short list! There were so man other choices!
DeleteC!!! Really liking the skyline fabric, only because its a bit of a novelty, but not really suiting this particular outfit...
ReplyDeleteAnother vote for the leopard :) I love leopard :)
DeleteLove the leopard but I have a feeling it's going to be too busy right under your chin...I think B is more subtle (impressionist love it) and better colours with the wool. But then you have them to look at one next to the other we don't ! The New York is fab by the way but again far too big a print I think right under the face...Yep..I'd go for B. I don't know if you're going to be any further helped with us lot all having different notions ! Good luck !
ReplyDeleteThanks Johanna - I'm really enjoying everyone's feedback on this :)
DeleteA!A!A!A! or maybe... A!!!!!!!!!!!! that is filled with awesome! beautiful crepe btw - perfect for your eyes.
ReplyDeleteIt is an amazing colour - so much more vibrant than I anticipated!!
Deletecould you make the dickie part somehow snap in so you could have differnt options depending on your mood?
ReplyDeleteLoving it Rebecca ! You like to have your cake and eat it ! lol !
DeleteA very cool idea. Yeah do that :)
DeleteOooo! BRILLIANT idea Rebecca!!! I'd have to make the cuffs interchangeable too.... I'll look into it :)
DeleteC. Reminds me of the color pallets of the original. C!c!c!
ReplyDeleteIf it were me, I'd be tied between a and c. A has more of the color scheme, but c just seems bit more fun. ;-)

I know!!! It's so hard!!!
DeleteL-l-l-eopard!!!!!
ReplyDeleteMy favourite neutral!!!
DeleteGo with d: like the retro feel of the plaid and it's SILK.
ReplyDeleteNew York skyline is too costume-y, and b just isn't as interesting with its monochrome color palette. The leopard print would be 2nd choice, but then you lose the retro feel.
I agree with you - love that retro plaid in SILK!!! But there is only a quarter yard of it... I still might be able to make it work...
DeleteMy choice would be a, New York cotton.
ReplyDeletegreetings Claudia
I'd say c or d! It's always better to add your own twist to an inspiration instead of copying anyways!
